The GSK Story

GSK came into existence in 2000 due to a merger between SmithKline Beecham and Glaxo Wellcome. 6 years later, GSK made its first acquisition by buying the American consumer healthcare brand CNS Incorporated. Notable among their products were FiberChoice dietary supplements and Breathe Right nasal strips. In 2007, GSK established its first R&D center in Shanghai to focus mostly on neurodegenerative diseases.
 
In 2009, GSK embarked on another acquisition by buying Stiefel Laboratories, the biggest independent dermatology outfit in the world. Later that year, GSK joined forces with Pfizer to establish Viiv Healthcare for HIV research. In 2010, GSK went on another acquisition spree. It bought Laboratories Phoenix in Argentina and Maxinutrition in the U.K. In 2011, GSK sold 17 of its brands to Prestige Brands Holdings for $660 million.
 
2012 marked the period where GSK officially expanded into the biotechnology industry. This company acquired CellZome, a biotech firm in Germany. In 2013, GSK bought HGS (Human Genome Sciences). GSK entered Nigeria and established a factory in Agbara, where it serviced the Nigerian consumer healthcare market.
