The Jumia Story

Jumia is a young company. Its history can be traced to 2012 when it was established by four individuals; a pair of former consultants at McKinsey (Sacha Poignonnec and Jeremy Hodara) and Raphael Kofi Afaedor and Tunde Kehinde. Its establishment took place in Lagos, which serves as its headquarters in Nigeria. Jumia soon started expanding to other countries in various parts of Africa; Kenya, Morocco, South Africa, Cote D'Ivoire, and Egypt. Jumia established offices in Uganda, Ghana, Tunisia, Cameroon, Tanzania, and Algeria
 two years after its inception.
 
The company launched Jumia Travel in 2013 as a hotel booking or reservation platform. Also, Jumia Food, its food delivery arm, was launched. Jumia launched these two to expand into other markets. In 2015, Jumia Deals followed suit. Jumia One joined the ranks in 2017, enabling Jumia customers to pay various kinds of bills. Soon after, Jumia launched Jumia Pay, its payment service which serviced all shoppers on the platform.
 
Jumia then broke into the finance sector by launching its lending program, which gave its customers access to loans. In 2019, Jumia was listed on the New York Exchange.
