Brief History of TotalEnergies

TotalEnergies has a rich history. The company traces its roots to the early 20th century in France after the First World War. The war made the country realize its need for petrol in the event there was another war to be fought against Germany. The initial idea was for France to partner with Royal Dutch Shell, but this was vetoed by Raymond Poincaré, the then-president of France. So a French oil firm was formed instead, thanks to the backing of 90 firms and banks. TotalEnergies was established in 1924 as Compagnie française des pétroles - CFP. In 1929, the company was listed on Paris Stock Exchange and was regarded as a private firm despite its origins.

The company began upstream oil and gas activities mainly from the Middle East in 1930. In 1933, CFP set up its first refinery in Normandy. After the Second World War, the firm expanded its oil exploration into Canada, Venezuela, and certain African countries while also hunting for energy sources in France.
